DON BOSCO AWARD WINNER
The award is named for
Saint John Bosco
, founder of the Salesian order. Don Bosco, as he is
affectionately known, spent his priestly life rescuing
children, from becoming victims of poverty or
perpetrators of crime. Today the Salesians continue his
legacy through schools, hospitals, prisons and parishes
in Europe, Central and South America and the United
States.

On Saturday, December 5, 2009,
Tom Rutkoski founder of Abode for
Children presented the second Don Bosco Award
to former
Pittsburgh Pirate, Freddy Sanchez, for
his contribution and dedication to children with
special needs.

Mike Clark emceed the event
story....
The first snowfall of the year
greeted the event. However, it only seemed to
amplify the general elegance of the entire
affair. As snowflakes fell with such casual
grace outside the enormous windows of the
Churchill Country Club, a group of a little over
250 people congregated there amidst the
sparkling crystal and china, to honor Freddy
Sanchez, the former Pittsburgh Pirate, whose
charitable endeavors with the Western
Pennsylvania Miracle League earned him the
special recognition of the Don Bosco Award. By
all regards it was a rather secular event, but
there was not a single speaker who failed to
mention God, and so we were reminded once more
to whom it is that we should be giving thanks.
We here at Gospa Missions and Abode for Children
would like to thank everyone involved,
especially Freddy and Alissa Sanchez for making
the journey from Phoenix to join us! We can only
hope and pray that next year's Don Bosco Award
Dinner will be just as successful.
